David Beckham Playing Soccer - Why all the fuss?

To watch David Beckham playing soccer is to watch a master craftsman at work, perhaps even an artist! As European soccer mourns, he arrived in the States with many wondering what all the fuss was about.

Soccer is growing in The States, no question about that and its about to get a whole lot bigger. Many in The States cannot get excited about soccer but even these people are wondering what's so special about David Beckham playing soccer?

To understand the phenomena that is David Beckham you need to understand the player. The reason he first won the England fans over and then the Real Madrid fans was not because he was the best player in the team, he wasn't. Nor was it his speed, or his ball juggling skills, his choice of bride etc.

The reason true soccer fans the world over, despite any allegiance to other soccer clubs, cannot help but admire him when they watch David Beckham playing soccer is because He never ever gives up. He plays with his heart on his sleeve for all to see and has done for some time now. That is why one day soon when you see his team mates hang their heads at 2-0 down with 5 minutes to go and you see David Beckham running, chasing and shouting at his team like his life depended on it, that is when the American sports fan will say "ahh..... now I get it!"

Of course, it helps that he has developed into one of the greatest passers the game has ever seen and his free kicks aren't bad either. The high level of skill was achieved through sheer bloody mindedness and years of endless practice. You see, our David was never a natural soccer player like say a Maradona or a George Best for instance. David Beckham started life as a young teenage winger at Manchester United with a problem - he couldn't get past a defender!

He soon realized if he was to progress under the ever watchful eye of the great coach Sir Alex Ferguson he needed a solution. So instead of trying to beat the defender and losing the ball he simply crossed the ball into the danger area for others, learning how to make it swerve around the defense and thereby completely removing the need to worry about a little thing like defenders!

With all this practice his dead ball shots also improved dramatically. He would hone is skills by shooting through car tyre's that had been hung on rope from the cross bar and he soon established himself as the Manchester United and England free kick specialist. He is now regarded as one of the worlds finest and rightly so.

Europe's loss is America's gain and when America see's David Beckham playing soccer for LA Galaxy they will soon understand why his fans rate him so high.
